A max bet rule is a term in many casino bonuses. It limits how much you can stake per spin or hand while you play with bonus funds. It is easy to miss, yet it is one of the most common reasons casinos take bonus winnings away. So it is worth understanding before you claim any casino offer.
What the rule says
A typical version reads something like: “While a bonus is active, the maximum stake is the lower of £5 per spin or 10% of the bonus.” It applies from the moment the casino credits the bonus until you finish the wagering or the bonus expires.
The casino sets the limit, so it varies between sites and offers. Some casinos use a flat figure such as £2 or £5. Others use a percentage of the bonus or set different limits for different games.
Why casinos limit stakes
Without a stake limit, a player could take a bonus and place a few huge bets on a high-volatility game. They would either win big or lose the bonus quickly. The stake limit prevents this. It keeps bonus play closer to the average outcome the casino planned for when it priced the offer.
What happens if you break the max bet rule
If you stake above the limit even once, most terms let the casino cancel the bonus and its winnings. Some casino software blocks bets above the limit automatically. However, not all does, so you cannot rely on the game stopping you.
- Check the limit before you start, and note whether it is per spin, per hand or per round.
- Remember that features such as buying bonus rounds or doubling up can count as a bet above the limit.
- If you play several games, check whether each game has its own limit.
Bonus limits and the UK slot stake limits
Separately, the UK Gambling Commission now limits online slot stakes for everyone. The limit is £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. A casino’s bonus limit can be lower than these limits, but it cannot let you go above them.
UK rules have also capped wagering on casino bonuses at 10x since 19 January 2026. Our guide to the UKGC wagering cap explains what changed.
Offers with no max bet rule
No-wagering offers pay free spins winnings as cash. As a result, they usually have no stake limit, because there is no bonus balance to protect. If stake limits put you off, our list of no-wagering casino offers is a good place to start.
Max bet rule checklist
- Find the max bet figure in the bonus terms before you opt in.
- Set your stake below it before your first spin.
- Avoid bonus-buy features and gamble features while a bonus is active unless the terms clearly allow them.
- Keep the stake limit in mind until wagering is complete or the bonus has expired.
